The mythical cycling event came to Girona for its first edition in Europe, bringing together 30,000 visitors and 4,000 participants in the sporting trials. The Sea Otter Europe is yet another commitment towards sports tourism from the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, which declared 2017 the Year of Cycling and Sustainability.
Highly satisfactory balance
The Sea Otter Europe generated high hotel occupancy and economic activity in Girona and the surrounding area. For a whole weekend, Girona and the Costa Brava became the capital of the cycling world. Sources of the organisation highlighted the support received as well as the city and the territory’s capacity to host such a large, complex event.
The 20,000 square metres of the Fira de Girona were filled with 350 brands of bicycles, accessories, products and destinations. Visitors were able to try out models of 24 of the best cycle brands in the world in the Bike Test. The great amount of public and the economic activity generated exceeded exhibitors’ expectations.
The commercial exhibition was accompanied by a series of trials, competitions and activities in an ideal setting for road bikes as well as for MTBs, according to the sportspeople. Participation was very high and everyone —from world champions and elite sportspeople of all cycling disciplines, to families and children— found a way to enjoy this sport.
